the smoke is clearing a bit since the whole world sighed a deep "what the fuck?" after hearing that standing US president, barack obama, won the nobel peace prize for 2009.
i think that, yes, he received the award a bit prematurely, considering he was only president for about 12 days when the nominations had to be submitted. but i think this is the first time the world (ok, the nobel committee) has been able to comment about obama as the US president. much of the world despised king bush the W and big dick cheney. international diplomats must be so pleased to have someone in the white house who recognizes the validity of other human beings and their nations that maybe this award symbolizes an acknowledgment of obama's efforts to bring the US back to a positive level of communication and collaboration with the rest of world.
i think the nobel peace prize and its $1 million reward might be a bit much for such a gesture, but i am pleased to hear obama say things like "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."
in addition, the obamas hosted a star party at the white house last week!! how cool is that?!
anyway, here is geir lundestad, secretary of the norwegian nobel committee, describing why they gave the prize to obama. feel free to share your thoughts!

My take, for what it's worth;
Is it premature for him to get a Nobel peace prize when he hasn't even been in office a year yet? Probably.
Is it premature to be throwing mass protests, labeling him a socialist, calling for his impeachment, and desperately interfering with everything he tries to do? Fuck, yes.
I think the Nobel Prize is an honor for the President, he was very gracious about accepting it.
I thought it interesting that Mr. Lundestad emphasized that Nobel's will calls for honoring achievements in "the previous year". This returns us to the central question of whether the award was given prematurely. However, I for one am very glad he was honored and hope this will enhance the agenda of international cooperation which was so severely degraded by our previious administration.
The number of deaths in Afghanistan escalated significantly in the last year. Iran expanded its ICBM tests. India expanded its nuclear weapons inventory. It's hard to find any evidence that Obama has done anything besides giving speeches to deaf ears.

I think this prize is suitable with him. Congratulation !!!
He deserve it..
of course this award is a joke as is potus. Unless the award comitte gave the award for socialist inicitives from the office of potus. That in of itself would not be a surprise being that the country of orgin is socialist. :(
I wish I was there...
I believe another reason why they decided to award Obama with a Nobel Prize is that Obama is far more deliberative about sending American troops in harm's way. This is reflected in the amount of time the White House spent planning a new strategy for Afghanistan a few months ago. While right-wing pundits and Republicans didn't hesitant to exploit this lengthy strategy review by calling it "dithering", it's clear that Obama takes his duties of commander-in-chief seriously. This is in direct contrast to the Bush 43 administration that had literally had no serious plan for occupation as they crossed into Iraq soil in March 2003. To draw another comparison, the FDR White House started planning the occupation of Germany in January 1943, more than two years before the eventual surrender of Germany.
