turkey on the barbie

i celebrated a fun thanksgiving this year.   the day brought together a canadian friend and a few aussies and we decided to mix a few standard cultural food items into the meal.

oysters!
turkey on the barbie happened!  i was skeptical at first, i admit, but it turned out to be delicious!

and in true aussie form, a redback spider crawled right up on the BBQ minutes after the bird went in.

we enjoyed a few drinks in the warm sunshine between preparing dishes and playing bocce ball in the yard

and then the feast really began!

my biggest task this year was convincing the aussies that pumpkin pie is a sweet dessert and not like a savoury veggie pie you would eat for dinner.   it was a success, as we ate it without any photos!   but i admit, it was hard to top the sweet yumminess of the pavlova!

happy thanksgiving!

jupiter layer cake

i'm slightly experimental with my baking and cooking, but this jupiter structural layer cake requires some serious skills and experience.   the layers are not to scale, but wow wow wow - look at the icing and the round layers inside.   so impressive!!

the main feature most people recognize on jupiter's surface is the giant red storm - a hurricane twice the size of the earth!

the oddity of jupiter is its interior.   the giant planet has no solid surface on which one could stand and watch the stars.  instead, about 90% of the planet's atoms are hydrogen.  in the outer regions, the hydrogen is a transparent gas, like on earth, but then conditions change as you go deeper inside.

the pressure starts to increase as you go farther down towards the center, and the increased pressure makes the gas more dense, until it becomes "liquid metallic hydrogen" - a state of hydrogen not produced naturally on earth.

there is probably a rocky core at the very center of jupiter, but actually, we really dont know.

we'll know more about the biggest planet in our solar system, jupiter, soon(ish), when the spacecraft called juno reaches its destination in 2+ years.  the SWRI mission webpage has a cool animation of how we think our solar system and jupiter formed.  stay tuned!

hokey pokey

hey everyone, i finally figured out what it's all about!!!!

apparently it's all about chocolate.  woohoo!   life is good :)

i first encountered this "hokey pokey" flavour in australia a few weeks ago, but it is apparently a big thing in new zealand.   hokey pokey ice cream is vanilla with some crunchy honeycomb toffee in it.   delicious!

also, people from the UK sing the "hokey cokey" instead of the "hokey pokey!"  i don't know why that always make me laugh, but it does.  the cirtical piece of info here, is that the rest of the world has neglected a hugely fun part of the song for way too long!   world, let's all adopt the mosh-pit-style interlude into the hokey pokey!

a sunny thanksgiving

we cooked up a thanksgiving bbq feast for about 25 friends over the weekend.   of course sydney decided to be sunny, hot and gorgeous on the day i wanted to turn the oven up to full blast, cook on the stove and work the grill.  oh well, it was good fun and well worth the effort!

the beginning of the spread...

the beastly bird.

she made a black forrest cake from scratch.   she wins!

songs were requested... i forgot to take my apron off before playing!

space food

not really sure why i think this image is so funny :)  it's a contribution by artist, giorgia zanellato, to an exhibition called "future" at the mobile museum.

moka coffee

i love coffee made from a moka pot and have a couple different sized stove top pots at home. the moka is a clever little brewing device.

you fill the bottom chamber (A) with water, you fill the funnel with ground coffee (B, and below), and twist on the top part (C), which is the brewed coffee collector.

when the moka is placed on the flaming stove, the water boils and the resulting steam creates pressure that pushes the water up through the funnel, soaking the coffee grounds. the pressure continues pushing the coffee-infused water through a metal filter above the coffee funnel and up through the spout, so that the coffee bubbles over and is collected in the upper chamber. when the lower chamber is almost empty (this only takes a few minutes), you hear a gurgling sound, which is the indicator that you should remove the moka from the heat source.

why am i telling you all this?

because yesterday, i saw an electronic moka in the office of a colleague at the university of sydney and was astounded by the brilliance of the modern innovation. why hadnt i thought of that before? i made a comment to him, and he instantly (re)gifted the moka to me!

now it is sitting on my desk and, to be honest, i'm worryingly excited about it.

not only does it produce a great cup of near-espresso-quality coffee, it has a transparent upper chamber so i can watch the goodness as it bubbles out into the collection unit.

happy happy joy joy.

austin texas

while i visited texas primarily for the american astronomical society meeting, i enjoyed some other aspects of one of my favorite cities in the world as well...

new year's eve.

i forgot how much they say y'all here, y'all!

an old tradition revived with a new years day swim in barton springs.

yee haw!

can't beat good BBQ (havent put the sauce on yet in this photo...)

drive-through banking.

live acoustic music soothes my soul. we saw sarah jarosz at gruene hall...

a true small town texas music venue ;)

food trucks and trailers have taken over the city. i think it's a creative and tasty way to support small business and keep austin weird.

did the world really need giant inflatable rasta hats with dreads?

the historic driskell hotel bar.

queso, margarita, and several kinds of salsa!!

happy happy yum yum.

a year in oz

we had a few people over this weekend to celebrate the fact that my flatmate and i both moved to sydney one year ago. time flies swiftly, and creeps along, simultaneously.

we had fun creating the spread, and a friend brought incredible flowers!

another friend brought yummy desserts and adorable meringue birds.

inspired by recent travels, i attempted to make a matcha and adzuki bean (green tea and sweet red bean) cake roll! it was my first attempt at the roll thing and i'm amazed it rolled up without any major cracks! overall i was pleased with how it turned out. the cake was a bit dry, but the flavours were nice and the colours were great!

i managed enough nerve to sing a few original songs for the very friendly audience. i should play in front of people more often. i can stand up and talk about science in front of an audience of hundreds without feeling as nervous as i felt playing live music in my own living room.

the sun treated us to a nice end to the lovely day.

it has been a good year here in sydney. took a while to get settled, but i feel at home now. it helps that the city is so ridiculously beautiful, i found a good person to live with, and our (mold-less) flat is a pleasant place to be :)
