a peek at the peak district

i spent last weekend celebrating my birthday in the peak district of central england. we hiked though the hills and dales on a pleasantly crisp and warm day with blue skies!

a big dam built in the late 19th century.

You had a great weekend for it. Peak District is funky but Lake District is funkier!

Actually I have been wanting to ask you something, wearing my hat as fan of Periodic Videos and now Sixty Symbols. I often wish I'd specialised in astronomy/astrophysics in my student days (long ago) but I didn't. Can you suggest a good book on the subject that is neither pop-science superficial nor hideously technical? A sound grounding in undergraduate physics may be assumed.

Can imagine what the environmental protests in the late 19th century looked like for these dams.
