neil armstrong

the inspired face of neil armstrong, inside the lunar module, still siting on the surface of the moon, shortly after his walk on the moon on 20 July 1969:

one amazing thing that he did was to allow every other human being pretend they could be there in that moment to feel what is reflected in his face in that image.

he lead a private life after his moon walk, but you can watch a rare interview with neil armstrong, which occurred in australia just last year.

also, i read on twitter that apparently neil used to tell unfunny jokes about the moon, and follow them up with "ah, i guess you had to be there."  :)

Hello Amanda:
Thanks for the post!
I would not have seen this interview with Neil Armstrong if it were not for your blog.
I enjoyed Neil the man while he was talking to Alex Malley.
Sad that Mr. Armstrong has now left life on this planet.
12 sets of human bootprints on the moon`s surface! Hopefully in my lifetime we shall see more.
A message from a human standing on Mars would also be great!
Goodbye Neil and thanks for the memories.
Peace and clear skies!

So now only 8 living histories of what it was like to walk on the moon remain. The memory of seeing a place where one has been and can relate to instead of a flat disc in the sky will never be as universally known or vividly felt as by the ones who actually went there. It must fade upon the memory of the world, and grow more and more dim by the lapse of time.
