lightning strikes jesus in ohio

a couple years ago, i told you about the bizarre 6-story "touchdown jesus" statue that lived near my hometown in ohio, USA.

well, in a hilarious twist of fate, early yesterday morning a bolt of lightning struck "quicksand jesus" and it completely burned! after the estimated $700,000 damage fire finished burning, only the wire frame structure remains.

"big butter jesus" has been such an embarrassing fixture next to the interstate highway for so long that it will be a strange relief not to see it on the regular drive between my mother's house and my sister's small town home.

recently, some friends decided to make a promotional video for their soul fire tribe by spinning fire next to "i cant believe its not jesus." their caption describes it all:

Jesus never looked so HOT... until he burned to the ground. RIP 6-14-2010.

Nice video! I like the scaffolding that remains — it adds to the story's post-apocalyptic Planet-of-the-Apesiness.

As I remarked elsewhere, they should replace the statue with one of Mary Margarine.

It always looked more like "drowning Jesus" to me. Like maybe the walking on water thing didn't work out.

I like the merman Jesus idea.

Some people have started calling it the Torchdown Jesus! LOL! I kind of like the idea of a Mary Margarine. Thank you, sis, for posting our now historic fire dancing video. And thank you Shango! We needed that laugh yesterday!

I used to think that this kind of religious INSANITY was restricted to the South. I'm not sure if it makes me feel better or worse that such proclivities are so widespread.

the bible belt seems to stretch farther than many of us are comfortable admitting :(

I think I like him better as a stick figure

Sounds like something else happened besides lightning. In this age of total surveillance, to not have a webcam or security cam capture the statue during the lightning strike is impossible.

Nah, I'm sure lightning is the sole cause. I've driven by the thing many times while visiting Ohio relatives. It's the highest structure in the area, just off Interstate 75 in front of one of those humongous super churches. For a mile on either side, it's just motels, fast food joints, and a couple of flea markets.

I've been waiting for someone to cite the Bible verse in which Jesus says, "When I'm gone, make 6-story idols of me."

Oh my god, what have you done
you destroyed the statue of your son

What's going on in heaven? Some kind of revenge maybe?
