i enjoy that michelle actively makes a statement with her fashion, and generally i like her sophisticated fashion sense. but this dress made my jaw drop, in a negative way. i was unpleasantly distracted by the frock-induced shock that interrupted the smile-glued-to-my-face moment. maybe her point was exactly to be as bold and unmistakable as the moment in history, in which case, she succeeded grandly. but still, i just didnt like it. it felt awkward. so i'd like to officially nominate a dynamic duo for the potential new positions of secretaries of style ;) haha!

Perhaps it would be better to dwell on the effect she has on Obama's decisions. I doubt whether her dress sense matters much.

I thought she looked great! But tastes differ.... :-)
I doubt she paid anything for the dress, she almost certainly got it on loan or as a gift from the designer (Narciso Rodriguez) - any designer would have done that. But if she did pay a lot of (their own!) money for it that's no one else's business.
Oh and if ever there was an occasion to blow an extravagant amount of money on a frock, it would be (i) your wedding day, (ii) you become president of a large country, or (iii) your husband becomes president of a large country. But maybe that's just me....
