my mom came to england to visit last month, and we took a trip to stonehenge. its a gorgeous and mysterious place, strangely located right next to a road. many friends here tell me stories of how they could climb all over the stones as kids, but now they are blocked off so you can only walk around from a distance, listening to a recorded history of the place.

Yeah, you'd think those Druids would have put it somewhere more peaceful. :-)
Yes, it seems likely that it's the other way around - the road was located next to Stonehenge, rather than vice versa. Though some of your roads are pretty old too, having been built by the Romans.
But if you do some kind of after hours tour, you CAN walk around and climb on the stones. I did that when I was in England 3 years ago. It was so cool. :)
I am so curious about Stonehenge. I have it's picture on my desktop.
Nothing has ever lead me down a longer road that learning about the wonderous Celt's, history, lore. My entire bloodline is Western European..and that subject has counted for many hours of wonder. btw, im a mutt just like us all.
When we went my wife found an early morning tour that let you walk around the stones before they were open to the general public. You can do everything except climb on them.
