the gorgeous astronomy picture of the day today showing lightning over the erupting eyjafjallajökull volcano...
... reminded me that i wanted to show you the latest sixty symbols video which describes what volcanic ash actually does to jet engines. (view video here).
here is a photo by interactives on flickr showing volcano ash with 400x magnification. really looks like chunks of glass, no?!
Of course now there are tons of people complaining about too much caution... I wouldn't like to be a passenger in one of the planes that will start flying today or tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, Amanda, you're timely and informative! (As is Sixty Symbols, of course.) Thanks for the knowledge!
ReplyDelete*sigh* The name/url option didn't allow me to sign. The popout doesn't like me.
ReplyDeleteThe volcanic lightning photo looks fantastically primordial.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame Eyjafjallajökull didn't erupt during the swine flu outbreak. I've demonstrated this idea musically http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRyRUQmQ8-k
